Cal Young and its vast resources

While the Cal Young neighborhood is a highly residential area, there are also more than a few highly commercialized areas, with large shopping centers. Considering the size of each of these shopping centers, it would be easier to introduce Cal Young’s resources by further separating the neighborhood into smaller areas centered around the commercial centers.

Delta Oaks Shopping Center

At the end of the Delta Highway past the Valley River Center mall, tucked against Belt Line Highway is the sprawling Delta Oaks Shopping Center.

It offers a wide array of resources, including the superstores Home Depot and Walmart, which is conveniently open 24 hours. Also dominating the scene are the big stores Market of Choice, a large locally-owned grocery story; Goodwill Industries, including the thrift store, administration building and computer store; the recently opened Jo-Anne’s Fabrics and Crafts store; Dick’s Sporting Goods; La-Z Boy Furniture Galleries; Woodcraft; Parties to Go; Rodda Paint; and Sherwin Williams Paint Store. Some other smaller stores include Sprint, T-Mobile, Eugene Pak Mail, Paramount Sewing and Vacuum, and a couple gas stations, Chevron and Low Price Gas.

Even for the picky eater, there is a variety of food to be found around the area as well. They include the new restaurant Spice & Ice, Asian cuisine and Italian gelato; a couple Spanish options, El Kora and Taco Time; some small local places, including Jasper’s Deli, Cafe Yumm, Sunny’s Deli and Lottery and Sushi Domo; many food chains as well, including Little Caesars, Starbucks (with a drive-thru!), Jamba Juice, Wendy’s and Subway.

Along with food, there are a variety of salons and spas. They include Perfect Look Salon – Delta Oaks Salon, Supercuts, Salon de Lange, Salon Centric (cosmetics store), Modern Salon and Spa and Studio 27. The NW College School of Beauty & Salon also lives in a small corner of the shopping center, home to a lively group of smocked students. There are many clinics and health centers as well, including the Willamette Dental Group, Willamette Family Center, Grant’s Hearing Center, Concepts Dentistry, Miracle Ear, Delta Oaks Veterinary Clinic, Oregon Chiropractic, Delta Oaks Dental Care and Back 2 Strength Chiropractor.

And of course, along with shopping areas, there must be investing, consulting and banking, which Delta Oaks seems to have devoted a multitude of offices and centers towards; including a Bank of America outlet, First Tech Federal Credit Union, West Coast Bank, Liberty Mutual Insurance, State Farm Insurance, Edward Jones Investment, and Fidelity National Title.

A couple of the more interesting parts of the shopping center might be the Guitar Center and Lesson Factory, and a little bar called The Delta Bar, a quaint little Hawaiian style pub with a outside seating area. A small colorful chalkboard sign inside reads, “Lets get funned up!” calling all comers to dollar jello shots, which the bartender pointed out to show the atmosphere of the place. The bar is owned by the same couple that runs a little food cart on the University of Campus, called The Sunset Hut.

The Duck Store (541) 345-2051

Whenever duck fans want the latest Oregon gear, there’s only one place to go- The Duck Store. The Duck Store in the Valley River Center is different than the other locations (13th St., and behind Autzen Stadium) because it supplies apparel and accessories not found at the other stores. And it makes up for it’s small size with a great window display, and it’s placement in Valley River Center, Eugene’s biggest mall. Whether fans go to VRC for movie or dinner, they always end up wandering into The Duck Store, to see Nike’s latest and greatest creations for the ducks.
