Just past the south side of University of Oregon’s campus is the South University Neighborhood. The neighborhood is home to many students, as well as families and children. The residential area is enclosed by the east of Patterson Street on the west, the west side of Agate Street on the east, the north side of East 24th Avenue on the south, and the south side of East 18th Avenue on the north.
Closer to campus there are many apartments for student housing. However, when I walked into the heart of the neighborhood I sensed a more of a family community. There were children riding bikes and playing basketball. A park located at 24th and University with a baseball field and jungle gym. Although it was a gloomy day, there were still people doing various activities at the park. Edison Elementary is also located within the boundaries of the neighborhood.
South University Neighborhood could easily be described as unique and quaint. None of the houses look alike and many are rather beautiful. The mixture of students and families is evident. There are even a couple fraternity houses located in the boundaries. There are a few restaurants and cafes within in the community. There is also the Sundance Natural Foods grocery store for shopping. A couple of churches are also established in the area. Ultimately, the South University Neighborhood provides a home to both students and families in Eugene.
